New Panthers head coach Ron Rivera felt that the Panthers needed to get better in the trenches. To fill that need, the Panthers selected Defensive Tackles Terrell McClain from Southern Florida and Sione Fua from Stanford with the first and last picks in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
McClain, 6′ 3″, 310 lbs., is more of a pass rusher, and will be relied upon to help collapse the pocket from the middle. With quarterbacks like Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Josh Freeman in the division, creating chaos in the backfield is a must.
Fua, 6′ 2″, 302 lbs is the nose tackle — meaning he’s the run-stuffing, space-eater that the Panthers’ defense needs. The Panthers need his strength to stop running backs like Mark Ingram, Michael Turner and LeGarrette Blount in the NFC South.
