Charlotte, NC — The Charlotte Eagles overcame a sluggish first half performance to beat the Sounders FC U-23’s 3-0 in the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Charlotte advances to play Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire on Wednesday, May 29th at Winthrop University at 7 pm.
The Eagle’s best first half chance came in the 6th minute Eagles midfielder Jorge Herrera created the first chance of the game as hit shot hit the post and was cleared for a throw in.
Charlotte controlled much of the possession in first 15 minutes but the Sounders U23’s held their shape well and withstood the pressure. Sergio Villasenor tested Sounders U23 goalkeeper Zac Lubin in the 25th minute with a bending shot that the goalkeeper was able to get his hands on to keep it scoreless.
The Eagles created another great chance when Christian Meza found a cutting Jorge Herrera whose cross was just knocked away from Samuel Asante who was open in front of the net in the 32nd minute.
Halftime found the teams deadlocked at 0-0.
Christian Meza took a pass from Drew Yates in the 52nd minute and ripped a shot at goalkeeper Zac Lubin but Lubin parried the shot away. In the ensuing goal-mouth scramble, Stephen Okai and Joshua Phillips would get tangled up and be pulled aside by the referee.
The games first goal came from 2nd half sub Drew Yates in the 57th minute as he picked up a loose ball in the U23’s half and dribbled just inside the penalty area and ripped a shot into the bottom right corner.
Jorge Herrera converted a penalty to double the Eagles lead 2-0 after Nick Raskasky took down Samuel Asante in the penalty box in the 65th minute. Fejiro Okiomah created the Eagles 3rd goal as he dribbled his way out of the back and crossed it to Jorge Herrera, who recorded his 2nd goal of the night, with a low shot to the right corner.
