Gettis, Clausen, Florence among surprises as Panthers cut to 53

The Carolina Panthers cut their roster to 53 players this afternoon, and there were a few mild surprises.

The Panthers parted ways with WR David Gettis, who led the team in receiving most of the preseason. Gettis showed good speed and hands, and although he’d revert to the Panthers’ IR if he’s not picked up on waivers, it’s likely that some team will take a flyer on the speedster from Baylor.

The Panthers chose to keep only five WRs: Smith, LaFell, Edwards, Ginn and Hixon.

Carolina also chose to keep six cornerbacks, but Drayton Florence wasn’t one of them. Dockery, DJ Moore, Munnerlyn, Norman, Thomas and undrafted rookie Melvin White all made the squad.

DE Wes Horton made the squad after a decent preseason, meaning the Panthers kept five defensive ends.

A couple mild surprises along the offensive line, with Folkerts, Chris Scott, and Nate Chandler making the team.

A bit surprising that Carolina only kept five receivers and four running/full backs. Tauren Poole was cut, but Armond Smith was kept largely due to his special teams ability.
