The Carolina Hurricanes began their preseason slate last night in our Nation’s Capital of Washington, as they would be shut out by the Washington Capitals 2-0 at the Verizon Center.
Despite the outcome, Eddie Lack was very impressive in his Carolina debut, making 22 saves in 39 minutes of playing time for the Hurricanes before turning it over to Drew MacIntyre(9 saves/2 goals allowed) for the rest of the game. Lack will be one of the guys to keep an eye out for Carolina this preseason, as he is battling along with Cam Ward for the starting goaltender’s position come October 8th, when the Hurricanes open up the season in Nashville against the Predators.
It would be somewhat of a goaltender’s duel between Lack and former Hurricanes goalie Dan Ellis for the first two periods of action, but in the third period, the Capitals would finally get on the board first, as Tom Wilson’s wrist shot made it by MacIntrye at 3:31 of the third to give Washington a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Capitals would make it a 2-0 lead as Derek Roy would get an unassisted goal at 13:11 to give the Caps a 2-0 lead, which would be the final score in regulation.
This season, the NHL has implemented a 3-0n-3 overtime frame, and Carolina and Washington would experiment with it. After Evgeny Kuznetsov missed the net high and wide down at one end of the ice, the Hurricanes would go on a 3-on-1 attack, with Kris Versteeg finding the back of the net. Even though the game was over, it was a sneak preview of what we’ll see in the regular season this year in the National Hockey League.
Carolina will continue its preseason slate on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh as they face Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Consol Energy Center for a 7:00 p.m. start.
