GREENSBORO, NC – After going almost a few months with no identity for the Charlotte Hornets new NBA D-League affiliate that will take the floor in 2016-17, the franchise officially revealed its name and identity tonight in Greensboro, as the team will be known as the Greensboro Swarm.
“When we selected the name and logo for our D-League team, it was important to us that they be closely tied to our Hornets brand. Swarm is a word that we often use in conjunction with the Hornets, as it not only describes a group of hornets but it also refers to a large, energetic gathering.” said Fred Whitfield, President and COO of Hornets Sports and Entertainment, the holding company that owns the Hornets, the Greensboro Swarm and manages Time Warner Cable Arena. “We believe this name represents the city of Greensboro, where fans gather in great numbers to support the game of basketball and show their excitement towards it.”
The franchise’s wordmark resembles the same wordmark that is used by the Hornets, using the same font and using the city name in smaller letters above the team nickname in larger letters. The primary logo(pictured below) prominently features the wordmark, above the design of a basketball with a stinger coming out of the bottom that is also used in the logo for the Charlotte Hornets, while the team’s secondary logo(pictured above) will feature the letters “GS” for Greensboro Swarm, with a smaller version of the basketball and stinger.
The Greensboro Swarm will utilize teal and cool gray as its primary colors, while Hornets purple will be an accent color. The wordmark, as well as the logos for the Greensboro Swarm were designed in-house by the Hornets creative department, and it was unveiled by speed painters from Artrageous at an event featuring Hornets players and executives during intermission in between the women’s and men’s championship games of the 40th Anniversary HAECO Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex Special Events Center.
The Greensboro Swarm will play 24 home games at the Pavilion at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, which will be renovated into a basketball fieldhouse, and fans interested in season tickets for the historic inaugural season for the Swarm can visit hornets.com/dleague and place a $25 deposit to gain season-ticket priority.
