The American Hockey League released its schedule for all 30 of its member clubs, and the Charlotte Checkers will begin its 7th AHL season with a four-game road trip starting in Cedar Park, Texas on October 14th against the Texas Stars in the first of a back-to-back set. After a back-to-back set against the Iowa Wild in Des Moines(October 21-22), the Checkers will return home to historic Bojangles’ Coliseum on October 28th at 7:15 p.m. against the Grand Rapids Griffins in the home opener. Starting this season, all of the Checkers Saturday night home games will start at 6:00 p.m., and the first of those such games will come on October 29th, when the Checkers and Griffins square off in the second of a back-to-back set.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN…TO START OFF THE SEASON
Charlotte will spend a good majority of the 2016-17 campaign on the road to begin the season. From October 14th through January 10th, the Checkers will play just 24 games on the road, compared to just 12 home games back at Bojangles’ Coliseum, while the longest road trip of the season for Charlotte will be an eight-gamer, from December 20th through January 10th, which includes a break in-between those games for the holiday break before the Checkers resume the road trip in Winnipeg eight days later. In the second half of the season, the Checkers will only have nine road games, while 16 home games will take place during that time.
MORE BACK-TO-BACK GAMES ON TAP THIS SEASON
The Checkers will have 28 back-to-back sets this season, which is the most in Charlotte’s seven seasons in the American Hockey League, with eighteen of those such games coming at home, while nine will be away from Bojangles’ Coliseum. The Checkers will only have their three-in-three game sets twice this season, in early November against Iowa and Rockford and in mid-February against Milwaukee and Rockford.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Checkers will enter its second season at Bojangles’ Coliseum this season, with the longest homestretch of the season coming in January, as they will have an eight-game homestand from January 13th-22nd.
NEW FOES AWAIT FOR CHECKERS THIS SEASON
On the 2016-17 schedule for the Checkers, the Checkers will see three new opponents for the first time ever, as the Stockton Heat and Bakersfield Condors will appear on the Checkers schedule this season. Another new opponent that the Checkers will meet up with this season is the Tucson Roadrunners, the newly-minted affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes.
