One of the most storied programs in college football will be coming to Charlotte in 2020, as Wake Forest University, along with the Charlotte Sports Foundation, announced today that the Demon Deacons will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Bank of America Stadium on September 26, 2020.
At a news conference earlier today at the stadium, Wake Forest athletics director Ron Wellman says that he is delighted and honored for the school to play in Charlotte against the Fighting Irish in
2020, after an amazing experience that the school had in 2007, when they last played a game in Charlotte. “We had a great experience in Charlotte for the Belk Bowl so this was an excellent opportunity to get back to Charlotte.” Wellman said. “We have a lot of alumni in the Charlotte area, and we brought 20,000 people in 2007 when we played in the bowl game, and when you look at both teams, this could be a good game.” Also offering his thoughts on playing Notre Dame in 2020 in Charlotte was Dave Clawson, the head football coach at Wake Forest. “The opportunity to play in the Panthers stadium against a brand like Notre Dame is a great opportunity for our program.” quoted Clawson. The last time Wake Forest played a game at Bank of America Stadium was in 2007, when they defeated Connecticut in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
“We are thrilled to be part of this game.” said Will Webb, the executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “This is a tremendous matchup and we are looking forward to welcoming two great fan bases to Charlotte.”
The Notre Dame/Wake Forest game in 2020 will add another game to the long and busy college football schedule that Bank of America Stadium will have over the next few years until 2020, including next year’s matchup between the N.C. State Wolfpack and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks to kickoff the season on September 2, 2017, followed up by a SEC/Big 12 showdown between the Volunteers of Tennessee and West Virginia taking place on September 1, 2018, and the Gamecocks will make a return visit to Charlotte in 2019 as they will play the North Carolina Tar Heels(the two will also play again in 2023).
Wake Forest will face the Fighting Irish on November 4th, 2017 at historic Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, and on November 17, 2018, the Demon Deacons will play host to the Fighting Irish at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem. The two schools faced each other three other times, with Notre Dame winning the first-ever matchup between the two schools 24-17 back in 2011 at Winston-Salem, with Wake Forest visiting South Bend in 2012 and 2015, with both of the games being won by the Fighting Irish.
