Conference USA released its 2017 football schedule for all of it member institutions today, and the Charlotte 49ers will begin its 5th season of college football with a pair of road games on the road. The 49ers will open up the season at Eastern Michigan on September 2nd, before heading to Manhattan, Kansas on September 9th, as head football coach Brad Lambert returns to his alma mater, where he spent 4 seasons as a player from 1984-87, to face the Kansas State Wildcats.
Charlotte will open up the home portion of the 2017 schedule at Jerry Richardson Stadium on September 16th, when they welcome in the Aggies of North Carolina A&T, and the following week, Georgia State will come into Jerry Richardson Stadium to take on Charlotte. The 49ers will open the Conference USA schedule on September 30th in Miami as they face the Florida International Golden Panthers, before returning home to face the Thundering Herd of Marshall on October 7th at Jerry Richardson Stadium. Charlotte will pay a visit to defending Conference USA champion Western Kentucky on October 14th to face the Hilltoppers, and on October 21st, the 49ers will welcome in the UAB Blazers, as this season will mark the return of football to the University of Alabama at Birmingham after a brief 2-year hiatus.
After a bye week, the 49ers will play at Old Dominion on November 4th in Norfolk, before hosting the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State at home on November 11th. Charlotte will play its final road game of the 2017 campaign at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on November 18th, before welcoming in Lane Kiffin and the Florida Atlantic Owls for the final game of the regular season on November 25th.
Last season, the 49ers went 4-8 on the season, while going 3-5 in conference play, which included league wins over Florida Atlantic, Southern Miss, and Marshall, in which they all came on the road. With the addition of UAB, there will be two seven-team divisions in Conference USA this season, with a couple of teams in C-USA playing division opponents at the same location as 2016, which was a situation that was avoidable with the C-USA West Division moving from six teams to seven teams. Conference USA’s football championship game, which pits the champions of the East and West divisions, will take place on December 2nd.
