At the team’s season-ticket pick up party held today at BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte, Charlotte Knights general manager Rob Egan announced that for one night only on July 15th, during the team’s “Carolina BBQ Battle Royale” night, the Knights will evolve into the Charlotte “Pitmasters” for that night’s game against the Gwinnett Braves, the triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
Egan says the change to “Pitmasters” for one night only is a way to honor the area’s rich tradition with BBQ. “For one night this season, we’re thrilled to honor BBQ lovers all across the Carolinas with this unique new brand.” Egan said. “We hope that our fans enjoy the new design and get behind this special theme night, and we will have plenty of delicious BBQ fare that night as well.
The logos were the brainchild of David Ruckman, the team’s Director of Entertainment, with the Pitmasters brand consisting of the following colors:
- BBQ Sauce Brown – Burnt orange on the crown of the cap
- Pulled Pork Brown – Brown color in the logos
- Sandwich Orange – Orange on the top half of the bun
- Sandwich Gold – Gold on the bottom half of the bun.
The cornerstone of the Pitmasters brand will be “Smokey”, a pulled pork sandwich character that is calling his shot a la Babe Ruth attempting to “Smoke the Ball” out of BB&T Ballpark. Starting today, the Knights are taking pre-orders for Charlotte Pitmasters merchandise that will arrive at the Knights Armor Shoppe later in the year, with New Era fitted hats being available online for pre-ordering starting today at $32, while Flex-Fit 39Thirty styles will be available for $28. In addition to the hats, t-shirts with the Pitmasters brand are also available for pre-order at $20. The on-field uniforms that the Knights will wear for that nights game will be autographed and made available to fans in an auction on July 15th, with all proceeds from the jersey auction going directly to Charlotte Knights Charities.
During the “Carolinas BBQ Battle Royale” night at BB&T Ballpark on July 15th, part of the ballpark’s menu that night will feature a sampler plate that will consist of three mouth-watering BBQ sandwiches, and fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite sandwich that night which will later become a staple at BB&T Ballpark in the years to come. Professional Sports Catering is the official food and beverage provider for the Knights, and Queen City Q returns as the official BBQ of the Knights.
Tickets for that night’s game, as well as all other Charlotte Knights regular-season games, are on sale now, and Opening Night will be on April 6th, when the Knights take on the Norfolk Tides. Fans interested in purchasing tickets for the 2017 Charlotte Knights season can call 704-274-8282, visiting the BB&T Ballpark box office, or ordering online at CharlotteKnights.com.
