The American Hockey League released its schedules for all of its member clubs today, and the Charlotte Checkers will open up its 8th season as a member of the American Hockey League on Friday, October 6th in Hartford against the Wolf Pack, marking just the seventh time that Charlotte will open up the season on the road(CHA is 3-3-1 in season openers all-time). After a stop in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to face the Penguins on October 7th, the Checkers will return home to historic Bojangles’ Coliseum on October 13th to open the home portion of their campaign against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Earlier this summer, the Checkers made their move back to the Eastern Conference, where they originally began their AHL campaign, and with this move to the East, Charlotte will see 14 new teams on the schedule.
Checkers to face three teams from the Great White North
For the first time ever in franchise history, the Checkers will see three Canadian AHL teams on this year’s schedule, with match-ups against the Toronto Marlies(October 21-22 at TOR; January 12-13 at CHA), and two new clubs, the Belleville Senators(Ottawa Senators) and the Laval Rocket(Montreal Canadiens)
Home is where the ice is
Charlotte will have five six-game homestands this season at Bojangles’ Coliseum, while the longest stretch of games that Charlotte will have at home will come from late-November to January, as the Checkers will play 18 games at Bojangles’ Coliseum, while playing 9 on the road. Last season, the Checkers finished the home portion of the 2016-17 season by going 27-10-1, good enough for a franchise record.
On the opposite side of the schedule, the Checkers will see trips ranging from several two or three game trips to a pair of six-game road trips, with both of these occasions coming in February/March. The heaviest road trip of the schedule will be an eight-game road trip in November, before returning home to Charlotte on November 21st to face Belleville.
Game times for the 2017 season are listed as follows:
- Monday-Thursday night games: 7:00 p.m.
- Friday games: 7:15 p.m.
- Saturday night games: 6:00 p.m.
- Sunday games(October-January and April 8th: 1:00 p.m.; February 18th: 3:00 p.m.; March 18th: 2:00 p.m.)
The biggest draws on the Checkers home schedule is around the Thanksgiving holiday, as the Checkers will play two games before the holiday and two more after the holiday, while the Checkers will once again play on St. Patrick’s Day for the second consecutive season, and they will wear specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off for charity.
