The Charlotte 49ers and the Charlotte Knights announced today that the 49ers baseball program will return to BB&T Ballpark for three home games during the 2018 season. The first of the three 49er baseball games at BB&T Ballpark will come on March 13th against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, with the 49ers playing as the road team in that contest. Charlotte will play host to SEC powerhouse Arkansas on March 20th, before wrapping things up on March 27th against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
“The relationship with the Charlotte Knights goes way back, and they have been great to us.” said Charlotte 49ers head baseball coach Loren Hibbs. “We want to continue that relationship and we have more games in the future that we have verbally agreed to, and it’s a relationship that we want to continue for years to come.”
In their previous six games played in uptown Charlotte, the 49ers have drawn over 31,000 fans, including the rain-shortened game against the Demon Deacons last season, averaging 5,200 fans per game. With the three games slated to take place at BB&T Ballpark, the 49ers hope to eclipse the 50,000 mark in only their fourth year of having a selected number of games played at BB&T Ballpark, which will celebrate its 5th anniversary in 2018.
For the first game on March 13th, the 49ers will be the visiting team, while Wake Forest will serve as the home team. Both teams tried to get their first meeting in last season, but it was cut short due to bad weather three innings in.
The following week will see the Arkansas Razorbacks pay a visit to Charlotte for a home-and-home set, with the March 20th game being played at BB&T Ballpark, while the back half of the home-and-home set will be played on March 21st at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium on the campus of UNC Charlotte. The 49ers will make a visit to Baum Stadium at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2019. The Charlotte/Arkansas match-up will be the first matchup for both teams since the pair of NCAA regional matchups in Tempe, Arizona back in 2011.
The third and final game on Charlotte’s uptown slate will be on March 27th, when the North Carolina Tar Heels make their return to Charlotte, and it will be Charlotte’s first meeting against the Tar Heels since 2013.
All three of the 49ers baseball games at BB&T Ballpark will begin a 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at 6:00 p.m., and tickets for the games will go on sale at a later date, while a complete schedule for the 2018 Charlotte 49ers baseball season will be released at a later date.
